Posting this is so much easier than repeating it a thousand times. I know it is much less personal but it will have to do. As most of our close family and friends know (but just in case you don't:0) Becca was diagnosed with having an SVT (rhythm problem) last week. It was scary to find out as I took her to the doctor with a pulse rate of 230! The doctor, of course, took it very seriously and called the peds cardiology office right away. We went straight down to Pres hospital were she was hooked up to machines and given an ultrasound of her heart. Thank God her heart is not enlarged and no deformities were found. They gave her meds (a beta blocker) to slow down the rate...which did its job. Monday she wore a monitor for 24 hours and today we went in to see the heart doctor (the one who would do the surgery.) They did confirm she is in the 'early stages' of WPW...Wolff Parkinson White syndrome. The good news is that we caught it before it did lasting damage to the heart. There are 4 options to control it: 2 include meds, one surgery and the other is an 'as needed.'
I went in thinking I wanted the ablation...which is the surgery or procedure that basically burns or freezes the extra pathway in the heart. I left feeling that meds may be a better choice for now. So...she'll be on meds, the atenolol, until she is older and the risk of surgery is less...and of course they (and we) will monitor her. So there you have it!
Can you believe my last post was her cheerleading competition? Incredible how life can change in only a few days! I want to thank, thank, thank all of you who have been praying for Becca. We greatly appreciate you! (Edie, Jane/Gram Faber, Grandma & Papa, the women Jane works with at the prison, Michelle...and anyone I missed-You are wonderful!)
Feel free to leave Bec a message and I'll make sure she gets to read it...It will make her happy:0)
